My 5th grade teacher introduced me to foreign lands. She travelled in the early sixties to Hawaii (still exotic then) and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula (really exotic then). Miss Hasler's pictures of Mayan temples at Chichèn Itzà (at that time still partly hidden by the jungle) planted the seed: I knew I would go there someday.
After forays to Europe & North Africa, and many many visits to Mexico, my fascination with the ancient has led me to Turkey, which has now become a sort of second home.
And between my annual trips to the East, I never miss a chance for a road trip closer to home.
